As the world continues to mix, as borders become blurred by technology, movement and exchange, identities –once unaltered and static – are now in constant dynamism: often merging, sometimes clashing, but always interacting. The 1000 Layers project, a strategic partnership initiative funded by the European Union, seeks to provide tools with which to address and understand these complex interactions, likewise providing mitigation strategies for sidelined aspects of individual and collective identity. The project addresses young people in particular, since it is often youngsters who face preconceived ideas and dominating narratives shaped long before they were born. Through card games and group activities, the 1000 Layers project trickles beyond youth, permeating society in general by pushing the message that all identities are valid and worthy of celebration.
